As a pet photographer, the 2024 International Pet Photography Awards was an inspiring reminder of the talent and passion within our global community. This year’s competition showcased some of the most captivating images of our beloved animal companions, with entries from truly every corner of the world.

I’m thrilled to share four of my winning images. And for fun, I'm including the insightful feedback provided by the judges. Their comments not only highlight what set these winning photos apart but also offer valuable insights on how to keep evolving my craft.

Here is the assessment criteria

Visual impact
Technical excellence
Emotional response
Level of originality
Vision and creativity
Animals body language and behavior

So, see the winning images below and read what the judges had to say!

Judge's comments:

"Striking, emotive and demonstrating a high standard of technical skill. A strong sense of narrative, both when capturing and enhancing the image. The tree branch directly above the horses back is the only distracting element as it breaks the fluidity of the overall image."

"Unique image that captures the viewers attention. Well done with capturing the gait of this horse in a way that keeps the head in focus and being able to see the front legs in focus. Overall, very impactful capture."

Judge's comments:

"This makes me feel the snow drift collecting on the dogs coat, so much wonderful detail and texture in this and its been well produced to bring out the best in the scene. Framing is so effective - the part tress and their naked branches hold us in and direct us to the dog and the use of these complement the dogs wiry and damp coat so well. I do feel that ever so slightly lightening the twigs between the dogs legs would have strengthen the structure of the pose further by giving a little more clear space between its legs. Fabulous work and an eye-catching portrait."

"The warm tones of the dog contrast beautifully with the cool tones of the scene, to bring the viewer directly to the subject. The pose is striking and the movement of the hair gives the dog a dynamic feel, even in what otherwise appears to be a peaceful scene. The trees on either side, and the snowy branches from the left create a wonderful natural frame. There are a few dark spots that pull the eye and would make a cleaner image if they were removed to softened: These minor editing tweaks would add a final polish to what is already a beautiful portrait."

Judge's comments:

"Gorgeous portrait with two relaxed and beautiful models. Good composition with the two characters looking towards the brighter side of the image. The fence is a bit distracting and it would be best to not intersect the mouth with the fence in the background."

"Beautiful expression and light on both the young lady and horse. The out of focus area lower left is a bit distracting. Well composed, nicely done!"

Judge's comments:

"This is a very fun image, it definitely stands out because of its quirkiness. You've handled the tones well, the dog's expression is funny. You have lost some detail in the white parts of the fur, particularly on the dog's right neck and snout.

Fantastic moment captured, the water drops have created a perfect circle and your cropping using the rule of thirds has perfectly enhanced this. A really fantastic image well done."
